Do you Exercise??

This blog is dedicated to my son, JM, who suggested I write these blogs as a way to inspire and to be inspired by others with diabetes.  Thanks JM!

You know those avid "gym rats" who live for fitness?  Well,  I wish I was one of them....but the sad truth is that
I am not.  I do force myself to exercise about three times per week...and my very motivated husband does try to motivate me as well.  I also draw inspiration from my incredible daughter, who jogs, and from my sister who does weight bearing exercises everyday.  But some days (especially in the dead of winter when its frigid outside) I'd prefer to hang by my ear lobes than go to the gym.  So...this is an area where YOU...can motivate me!
What do you do for exercise?  Are you a motivated exerciser?  What keeps you motivated?  Please post comments.  I will reply to each one....I promise!
Also....feel free to add your e-mail address all the way at the top to receive these blogs via e-mail.

  1. Hi cuz, it's me again. As you know, I regularly exercise. It usually takes the form of a brisk 2 1/2 mile walk almost every day (don't walk during lightening storms, for example). I also play tennis when I can. I used to run and even ran a marathon about 30 years ago. At the time, the place where I worked had gym facilities and allowed for flexible work hours. So, I'd take a long lunch hour and do my daily run before lunch. It was here that I got to know a guy who has Type 1 diabetes. He was a true marathon runner (unlike me who only did it on a dare and only did it that one time) and qualified for the Boston Marathon. He claimed that his running allowed him to eat anything he wanted and that his high level of exercise helped him control his blood sugar. I don't know if it really works that way--all I can say is he appeared to be in excellent health. Regardless if he was correct or not, I do encourage everyone to exercise on a regular basis. Our bodies weren't made to be sedentary.

Maybe, some readers here could weigh in if there is such an effect. I can only say that regardless of preconditions, it can't hurt to exercise.

  3. Hi,
I walk to work. I decided not to renew the lease on my car in February, and since then I am forced to walk 2 miles a day (1 mile each way). It was a good way for me to start because I don't have a choice. I HAVE to work.
I also need a buddy to do any real exercise. I have a hard time keeping myself motivated every day. I work out with my boyfriend. We try to jog in the morning and do a dvd in the evening. I am T1 and have seen DRASTIC improvement to my sugars since I started exercising regularly.
Start small and work your way up. Even a little change can make a big difference!

  4. Hi Zakia,
Thanks so much for your comment! I love that you walk to work 2 miles each way! That is awesome!!! AND...you jog before work AND do a DVD in the evening??? Thats a lot of exercise! Good for you! I did do a stationery bike yesterday for 40 mins and the day before I did the treadmill for 30 minutes. This weekend i will start doing light arm weights.
Thanks so much for your comment and your inspiration!

  5. Hey Lissy,
It is two miles total, just one each way. But thanks! My boyfriend has really influenced my exercise. Seriously, when he works the night shift I have a REALLY hard time making myself go out in the am without him.
Good luck with the weights! I use bands for a lot of upper body stuff. I find them easier to store than hand weights (also, because I don't have a car the band are MUCH easier to transport!).

  6. Thanks for explaining Zakia. I did almost 50 mins on the treadmill this morning and felt so good afterwards! Thanks for all the inspiration. Did you read my latest post up at the top?
